Teal is the awareness color of ovarian cancer. Women of Teal is a play on the words "Man of Steel" used to describe Superman. I have found my fellow ovarian cancer survivors to be the strongest, most helpful women in the world. They are truly Women of Teal!

A Teal Walk for Ovarian Cancer Research - The Sandy Sprint
No need to wait until September to help raise awareness of ovarian cancer and funds for research. You can take part in the Sandy Sprint Super Hero 5K/10K this April. The Sprint is hosted by the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation at the Philadephia Art Museum in Philadelphia. This year is extra special as the Foundation will celebrate its 15th Anniversary.
While not required participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite Super Heros and to raise $150. If you are unable to attend you may participate as a Sleepwalker. Last year's almost 4000 participants raised $252,000 for research. Funds raised at this year's event will support the Ovarian Cancer Dream Team and the Ovarian Cancer Research Grant Program.
I have completed this walk in the past and had lots of fun with other survivors and caregivers. These survivors would love for you to help out this year.
To register visit www.sandysprint15.kintera.org
Online registration closes on Wednesday April 22nd.

As September Comes To An End
It is hard to believe that September 2014 is coming to an
end. I was away for the first half of the month so I missed doing my usual awareness activities.
I did though still hang my teal ribbon flag and join Graceful Hope for their
walk. And on Thursday, I went to the Lunch and Learn at the Cancer Support Community of Central New
Jersey. Dr Tchabo,
Atlantic Health, spoke about the latest research and treatments for ovarian
cancer, cervical cancer and uterine cancer. Although I missed a few events, I experienced a lot of what September
as ovarian cancer awareness month means to a survivor- learning about the disease, raising awareness,
honoring fellow teal sisters and remembering the lives cut short by the
disease.
This morning I was thinking to myself how things have
changed in the past 9 years. It has been a gradual change but I think a change
for the better. Teal ribbons on trees are no longer rare thanks to thousands of
Turn the Towns Teal Foundation volunteers
throughout the state and country. This year more news channels had segments
focusing on ovarian cancer like this segment on channel 7 featuring my friend, Valisia LeKae.
More newspapers throughout the country shared stories about
walks and focused on stories of survivors.

Even with this awareness the 5 year relative survival rate (SEER data) for ovarian cancer is 44.6% and for women with late stage disease the rate drops to 27%.
What can I do? What can you do? September may come to a close but I will not stop raising awareness of this disease. I hope you won't stop either. I will continue sharing information about symptoms. I will continue to stress that women, diagnosed with
ovarian cancer, be treated by gynecologic oncologists. I will still tell women that every woman is a risk. And I will continue all
year long to advocate for more funding for ovarian cancer.
In another 9 years I want to be able to write "The 5 year relative survival rate for ovarian cancer has risen dramatically from 44.6% to over 80% ".

Right Around the Corner- Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
September, National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, is right around the corner. It looks like it will be a busy month in our area.
If you are ready to walk to raise awareness, funds for research or to support women with ovarian cancer you have lots of choices in NJ. Try the Teal Wings of Hope Walk in Hamilton on September 1st, the Kaleidoscope of Hope walks on September 9th,16th or 29th , or the NOCC Northern NJ Walk to Break the Silence on the September 23rd.
Want to dress up and party? Try the Sandy Rollman Foundation's Teal Passport Gala and Auction on Sept 15th in Philadephia.
How about a seminar , fashion show and exhibit in support of the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund ? Register for the Color of Teal Expo on Sept 29th in New York City.
Here is what is in store for me. After hanging my Teal Ribbon Garden flag, I'll be wearing Teal on Wear Teal Day ( Sept 7) to raise awareness of Ovarian Cancer. At the end of the month I will be volunteering at the Kaleidoscope of Hope (KOH) Walk in Avon, NJ ( Sept 29th). I'd also love to break the $5000 mark on my personal fundraising page in support for the ovarian cancer researchers at the Cancer Institute of NJ.
So what will you be doing?
If you are part of an organization that will be having an event in September please let me know the details and I will be happy to spread the word. Thanks.

Won't you help them raise even more money this year! By the way, the food at the Olive Branch is tasty so you really don't want to miss this fun way to raise funds for ovarian cancer research and meet a pretty incredible family.

A Weekend of Ovarian Cancer Foundation Activities
Busy weekend ahead.
Team JLO:
Tonight, I will be getting together with Team JLO which raises funds for the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation. Team JLO is named in honor of my friend, Janice Lopez who passed away last September after an almost four year battle with the disease. Her sons continue the team in her honor . Nick and I have joined with the Lopez family to help raise awareness of OC by hanging teal ribbons in Edison in September,Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month .
Team JLO is holding their 4th Teal Night for Life tonight beginning at 5pm at the Olive Branch Restaurant in New Brunswick, NJ. There is no cover charge but donations are welcome. So come out for good food, good drink and great company. Oh, I almost forgot there are some pretty awesome prizes. So look for me tonight- I'll be wearing teal.
Kaleidoscope of Hope Foundation:
Saturday night I continue my OC activities. Nick and I will be attending the Kaleidoscope of Hope Foundation's Annual Spring Gala. The Gala will once again take place at the Westin Governor Morris in Morristown, NJ. I can't wait to get together with the other Board Members and our supporters to celebrate a year of fundraising. We will be awarding this year's research grants to researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Alabama. We will also present our Founders Award to my Avon walk friends Janice, Kathy and Mariclaire- "The Jersey Shore Girls". There will be live and silent auctions and the night's MC will be Gary Fisch , owner of Gary's Wines and also known as the "Wine Guy" from the Food Networks "Hot Off the Grill".
There is a surprise too that we've been working feverishly on over the past few weeks. It should be a fantastic night!
