Day 7 A Month of Teal - Ovarian Cancer Statistics

When I was in treatment in 2005 someone told me to not look the statistics for ovarian cancer because I was a person not a number. But it is important to know the statistics so everyone understands how important research is and why better treatments and ultimately a cure are so important to so many women and their families.

An estimated 22,440 new cases of ovarian cancer will occur in 2017, which is 1.3% of all new cancer cases.
60% of all cases are women with distant disease (metastasized cancer )
20% of all cases has spread to lymph nodes (regional)
15% of all cases are found only in the ovary ( localized)
~ 6% of all cases are unstaged

Rates for new cases of ovarian cancer has dropped 1.9% each year for the last 10 years.

Ovarian cancer will cause the deaths of 14,080 women in 2017, which is 2.3% of all cancer deaths.

In 2014, 222,060 women were living with ovarian cancer.

The percent of women surviving after 5 years is  46.5% ( 2007-2013)
But the percentage of women varies depending on the stage at diagnosis. ( More on staging tomorrow.)
95% of all women diagnosed at early stage ( localized) disease are alive at 5 years.
73% of all women diagnosed with regional disease are alive at 5 years.
28.9% of all women diagnosed with distant disease are alive at 5 years.

The median age at diagnosis is 63 years.

Ovarian Cancer - By The Numbers

-->As disturbing as the statistics related to ovarian cancer are I share them here today because it is these numbers that drive my advocacy to raise awareness,  funds for research and support other women with the disease.

Ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in an estimated
21,290
women in 2015 in the US

Between 2008 and 20012
2,960
women were diagnosed with ovarian cancer in NJ.

Ovarian cancer is
1.3 %
of all cancer diagnosis in 2015 in the US

-->
In the past 10 years the number of new cases
of ovarian cancer in the US has dropped by
1.1% each year.

In 2012 there were
192,446
women living with ovarian cancer in the US.

Ovarian cancer will cause the deaths of an estimated
14,180
women in 2015

There has been
0
significant change in ovarian cancer death rates in the past 10 years.

Between 2008 and 2012  ovarian cancer caused the deaths of
2338
women in NJ.

The relative 5 year survival rate
for all women with diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the US is
45.6 %.

-->
At the time of diagnosis:
15 % of all cases have disease confined to the ovary ( localized) .
19 % of all cases have disease which has spread to the Lymph nodes ( regional)
60 % of all cases have disease which has metastasized. (Distant)
6% if all cases have unstaged disease.

The five-year relative survival rate for women
with localized disease at diagnosis is
92.1%

The five-year relative survival rate for women
with metastasized disease at diagnosis is
28.3 %.

My Story: When I first heard these statistics I was scared. My gynecologic oncologist told me that statistics are numbers not women. I wanted to be in the part of the number that made it 5 years.  Here I am 10 years later.

I use these stats to make people aware that we need to increase early diagnosis of ovarian cancer and to develop treatments that will provide more late stage women with longer survival

Let's Think Global - World Ovarian Cancer Day May 8th

I frequently share stats and information about ovarian cancer in the US but I am going to go global and talk about World Ovarian Cancer Day (WOCD) which is Friday May 8th in 2015. The first WOCD was held in 2013.

I think this is so important that I've shared my story on the World Ovarian Cancer Day website and have taken the pledge to share information about the disease with at least 5 women.

You can find more information to participate in events held round the world or to share information about ovarian cancer in your local community on the WOCD website.

Here is what you need to know:

Worldwide, ovarian cancer has the lowest survival rate of any gynecologic cancer.
A quarter of a million women are diagnosed worldwide with ovarian cancer and the disease is responsible for one hundred forty thousand  deaths each year.
Only 45% of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer survive five years.
There is no detection test for ovarian cancer !

The symptoms of ovarian cancer are similar to other less serious conditions but they are the same for women all over the world.

  • Bloating
  • Feeling full quickly
  • Abdominal pain
  • More frequent or painful urination.

Please share these symptoms with the women you know and their loved ones . Feel free to share the graphic above and use #WOCD when you tweet.

Thank you.

Relative five-year survival rates ( the number of women who live at least  5 years after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer compared to others the same age who do not have cancer)
Stage I  89%
Stage II 66%
Stage III 35%
Stage IV 18%

There are not as many women diagnosed with ovarian cancer as are diagnosed with  breast cancer but that does not mean we should not advocate to find a cure, to continue to develop a detection/ screening  test and to support research to develop better treatments for this disease.
