My sister Roberta had breast cancer. So way before I knew anything about TEAL I thought of things in pink.
Brighton is honoring Breast Cancer Awareness month with the Power of Pink. Two of my favorite organizations - CINJ and the Wellness Community of Central NJ will benefit from the sale the Pink bracelet and the Badge Clip. The promotion runs until October 31st.
North Jersey friends visit the Brighton Store at the Mall at Short Hills. Ten dollars for each piece purchased will go to the Wellness Community -Central NJ
Central Jersey friends visit the Brighton Store in the Woodbridge Center Mall . Ten dollars will benefit the Cancer Institute of NJ.
The limited-edition bracelet features Brighton's signature heart charm, which slides open to reveal the words "Trust your journey" and "Everything is possible." Brighton designers crafted these sentiments in order to remind the wearer that there is a gift to be found at the end of every journey. The badge holder/lanyard features a breast cancer awareness ribbon adorned with 15 sparkling pink Swarvoski crystals.

Every Day is a Blessing! I was blessed by another beautiful fall day.
Teal is the awareness color of ovarian cancer. Women of Teal is a play on the words "Man of Steel" used to describe Superman. I have found my fellow ovarian cancer survivors to be the strongest, most helpful women in the world. They are truly Women of Teal!

The Patient Active Guide to Living with Ovarian Cancer is part of a series of national cancer-related programs created by the Wellness Community . The Patient Active Guide to Living with Ovarian Cancer was made possible through an unrestricted educational grant from GlaxoSmithKline Oncology.

TWC-CNJ Launches Cancer Transitions - Moving Beyond Treatment " program at Survivors Day Celebration
Last night Nick and I spent time at the Bridgewater Manor ( the location of my daughter Theresa's wedding reception last year.) . It was the site of the Wellness Community of Central NJ's Survivor's Day Celebration and marked the Launch of the "Cancer Transitions - Moving Beyond Treatment" program.
"Cancer Transitions" is a free 2 1/2 hour , six-week program designed to help cancer survivors make the transition from active treatment to post-treatment care. The Wellness Community has worked closely with the Lance Armstrong Foundation for the last 3 years to create, pilot and implement this program. Sanofi-aventis US will be providing funding for the program throughout the United States. It just so happens that sanofi-aventis is located just down the road (Route 202-206) from the Wellness Community of Central NJ. We all got a taste of the program through a short introduction by four speakers.
The night also included a keynote speech by Audrey Vitolins who spoke on "Celebrating the Beat of Significance"; Mark Wood and the "Healing Power of Drums"( I love drumming) and the awarding of the Spirit of Courage Award to Deborah Rochon and Spirit of Caring Award to Florence Kelly. A number of other community groups such as NOCC, ACS, Cancer Hope Network, etc. provided information during the registration period. The night concluded with the distribution of Red roses to survivors and yellow roses to caregivers.
I have participated in Wellness Community- Central NJ gynecological cancer networking group for over 2 years now. I've also attended a number of other workshops and classes. Walking in the door of that small white building in Plukemin is like going in to your best friend's home. You always feel welcome and comfortable enough to share your joys, your concerns and your pains. Thank you to Eunice, Ellen, Karen, Patty and all your volunteers for giving us a place to do just that.

Spirit of Courage Award

On June 1, 2008 I was awarded the Spirit of Courage Award by the Central NJ Wellness Community. Since I was in Texas, Matt accepted the award for me.
It is a truly beautiful glass award featuring a lighthouse. This photo that I took does not do it justice.
My thanks again to everyone at the Wellness Community of Central NJ. They have helped me navigate my way through my cancer journey and have given me support and advice on how to advocate for others with cancer.

A New Advocacy Group is Forming for NJ Cancer Survivors
In January Betty Gallo and I gave an Advocacy 101 Workshop at the Wellness Community of Central NJ. Betty is in charge of Outreach and Government Relations at the Dean and Betty Gallo Prostate Cancer Center at CINJ. There was so much interest in advocacy among the people who attended we decided to meet again. ( Our original meeting for March had to be postponed.)
Ellen Levine, Program Director of the Central NJ-Wellness Community, was kind enough to contact interested parties and allowed us to meet last night in the Wellness Community's building in Bedminster. Ellen also participated in the meeting. After introducing ourselves Betty reviewed a number of bills at the State and National level of interest to cancer survivors. The last bill she spoke of was HR 2676 and S 2999 Access to Cancer Clinical Trials Act of 2008. The Act would require group and individual health insurance plans to provide coverage for individuals participating in approved cancer clinical trials . ( Being a clinical trial participant myself I know how important participation in clinical trials can be.) Everyone in the room supported the bill and wanted to do something to insure the bill becomes law.
We agreed that the best way to make sure that the voices of NJ cancer survivors are heard would be to form an advocacy group. We will work on a name and mission statement via e-mail and snail mail over the next month or so. We are hoping to work with the CINJ Advocacy Commission of which I am a member ( and how I met Betty). We also will develop contacts with support groups , hospitals and other cancer survivor organizations throughout the state. If anyone is interested in being a part of this new group, please leave a comment for me and I will add you to our list of participants. We are still working out when and where we will meet but we hope that those who can not attend meetings can still join and receive e-mail's regarding bills, awareness campaigns, education etc. It really is exciting to be on the ground floor of an organization that can change the future for cancer survivors in NJ. Our Next Meeting is scheduled for June 30th.
