She Gave Many Hope

I first spoke with Lois Myers in early 2007.  She had been diagnosed in 1998 with stage 3 ovarian cancer and although she had a recurrence in 2005 she was disease free then. I had reached out to her to talk about getting involved with the Kaleidoscope of Hope Foundation. The Foundation raises funds for research and awareness of ovarian cancer and was founded in 2000 by Lois, Gail MacNeil and Patty Stewart-Busso. I went to the 2007 Awards Gala and later joined the Board. When I recurred in 2008 Lois supported my decision to have surgery first  and insisted that I remain on the Board through treatment.

2009 KOH Awards Gala (Lois, Dee, Carole)

Lois was a driving force in NJ and even in Washington DC as she raised awareness and funds for an early detection test for ovarian cancer and ultimately a cure for the disease. She also gave me hope that I could live a long life. We left the KOH Board around the same time ( I rejoined the Board earlier this year) and we stayed in touch via e-mail and Facebook.

Sadly those occasional messages have come to an end. Lois passed away yesterday, November 29, 2016.

Over 18 years as an Ovarian Cancer Survivor.  She will be missed by her community of Teal Sisters and the entire ovarian cancer advocacy community.

Rest in Peace Lois.

September - A Busy Awareness Month

Earlier today I realized that almost 30 days have gone by without posting to this blog. My best laid plans to keep up with posting just did not work out.

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. This year more so than in the past I spent a lot of time on Facebook and Twitter posting information about awareness events and information on ovarian cancer. I posted for myself as Women of Teal (@womenofteal) and for the Kaleidoscope of Hope Ovarian Cancer Foundation (KOH) (@koh_nj) .

In addition to the work I did at home on the computer I also attended two KOH events as well as an event that my friends, the Lopez family, held for their foundation, the Janice Lopez Ovarian Cancer Foundation.

On Sept 18th I manned the Survivors Table at KOH's Gail MacNeil Morristown Walk. There were special survivor t-shirts, beads and notebooks for survivors. I was so happy to meet eight women who had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I created a large kaleidoscope image that the women could sign with their date of diagnosis. Eleven women who had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer signed the image.

I also got a pleasant surprise. I was awarded the KOH Spirit of Courage Award.
Some of the many walkers at the Gail MacNeil Morristown KOH Walk

Lynn Franklin , President of KOH awarded me the Spirit of Hope Award.

The next Saturday I attended the Avon-by-the-Sea KOH walk, once again manning the Survivor Table. The day was rainy but that did not stop over 700 walkers from walking the boardwalk at the Jersey shore to help raise funds for ovarian cancer research.

Walkers on the beach waiting for the walk to start.

Bagpipes on the Boardwalk.
I was so happy to add more names to the kaleidoscope image.

Then on Sunday, September 25th, I attended the Janice Lopez Ovarian Cancer Foundation 3rd Concert for the Cure. It was an amazing afternoon listening to the Encore Orchestra of NJ and some amazing Broadway vocalists. Once again I was blessed to be honored by the Foundation and received their first Teal Champion Award.

What a month for me!  I appreciate the awards and being able to share some fun times with my husband and friends. Yet there were times during this month that I felt sad. Sad because so many women who were my friends and advocacy colleagues were not with me at these events as they had been in the past.  I missed Carole, Janice, Gail, Pam and others. It is in their memory that the advocacy work that I do takes on a special meaning for me.

Mixed Emotions

Sometimes I find myself so deep in my advocacy work and spending time with family ( my son and his wife visited for a few days)  that I don't have time to write blog posts. I apologize to my readers.

This past weekend, I attended events for two ovarian cancer organizations. The Teal Tea Foundation (TT) held their 10th Anniversary Gala on Saturday.  And the Kaleidoscope of Hope (KOH) Foundation  held their Annual Awards Luncheon on Saturday. Both NJ based foundations raise funds for ovarian cancer research and awareness.

But in the post will not be writing about the wonderful work these foundations do each and every year.  Rather, I want to share how I felt as one of the survivors in the room.

When I arrive at each one, I am proud. Proud to be involved in organizations that are making a difference.  I am hopeful. Hopeful for the future as I listen to the researchers talk about their work.  Yet, I am sad. So sad that I at times I have to hold back tears.

Why? You're healthy you say. You should feel good. Yes,  that is true but surviving without your friends by your side is difficult at times.

My friends, three in particular, whose lives were lost due to a gynecologic cancer, were missing from these events - Anne, Shari and Carole. But do you know who was there? Their husbands - Don, Dave and Bob.

I watched the faces of these supportive caregivers as their wives were honored and again as they watched survivors receive a special gift. I glance at my husband who had that look - knowing that he was thinking how it might have been him.

Don't get me wrong it was wonderful to see Don, Dave and Bob. They knew me during those "no Hair Days". But I got well and their wives did not. So in a way the relationship changed.

It is hard to describe the nervousness and funny feeling I get in the pit of my stomach when I first see these men.  Sometimes I worry about what I will say. Do I remind them of a time filled with pain? I'm not sure what I am feeling - survivors guilt maybe?

I haven't seen Don since last year's TT event. We reminisced over the times he brought Anne to support group because she wasn't well enough to drive herself. He told me how he loved hearing all of us laugh at those meetings as he sat in a nearby lounge. That funny feeling started to go away.  Don smiled as I told him about the heron who regularly visits the pond behind my home. Anne loved herons and asked that we think of her when we see one. I think of her a lot.

It took me until the last 15 minutes of the TT Gala to walk up to Dave. Shari passed away July, 2014. Like Don, the last time  I saw him was last year's TT event.  I walked up to him and said, " I was friends with... " he stopped me mid-sentence and said "Sure I know who you are. Dee, how are you doing?"  and I got big hug and the funny feeling went away. We talked about our families and he repeated more than once how strongly he feels that supporting research is the only way we can make a difference in the lives of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I totally agree. Together we are focused on finding a cure.

I've seen Bob a number of times since Carole passed away in February. We both now serve on the Board of KOH. One of the reasons I returned to the Board of KOH was because of Carole and her dream of finding a detection test and a cure. I am happy that I will be working with Bob because we are on the same page when it comes to the importance of research . Seeing him more frequently  keeps the funny tummy feeling from kicking into high gear.

At events like these two I especially feel the loss of these women but I am glad that I have the chance to see their husbands and families, even if it means I feel such mixed emotions.

I know there are bereavement groups but does anyone know of a group / organization the reaches out to the countless partners, spouses and family members whose loved ones lives were taken by ovarian cancer?

Thankful for: OC Research Support

There are many organizations that raise funds for cancer research. A simple Google search of "organizations that support ovarian cancer research " will give you over 900,000 results. Some of these are large national non-profit organizations with offices and multiple employees with large budgets that support research in addition to other programs such as awareness and legislative advocacy.

But there are also many small, local non-profit organizations throughout the US whose efforts should not go unheralded. They have all volunteer boards, meet in public spaces or around someones dining room table and still manage to make a difference and change the research landscape by supporting established research programs for early detection and treatments as well as young researchers.

Yesterday, I was invited by the GRACEful Hope Foundation to attend their presentation of a check for $30,000 to support ovarian cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. For over 4 years now the GRACEful Hope Foundation lead by the Rocha Family and friends have supported ovarian cancer research to honor the memory of Grace and Erika Rocha.

Another NJ non-profit, Kaleidoscope of Hope Foundation , earlier this year presented grant awards to RACHEL N. GRISHAM, M.D. ,Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, to support her research on Deciphering the Biologic Predictors of Response to Targeted Therapy in Low Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer ,LILIE LIN, M.D. , University of Pennsylvania,  to support her Pilot Study of a Novel PARP Inhibitor PET Tracer in Ovarian Carcinoma  and continued funding the project of
GEORGE PRETI, Ph.D., Monell Chemical Senses Center,  A Novel Multidisciplinary Approach to Development of an Effective Ovarian Cancer Screening Diagnostic using Volatile Biomarkers. KOH has provided over 2.7 million dollars to support ovarian cancer research in the past 15 years.

Since 2010, The Teal Tea Foundation has supported Dr. Eric A. Ariazi, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Dr. Elyce Cardonick, Cooper Cancer Institute, Dr. Denise Connolly, Fox Chase Cancer Center and Dr. Lorna Rodriguez, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

The Janice Lopez Ovarian Cancer Foundation supports ovarian cancer research through their annual Concert for a Cure.

Two other small non-profit organizations in NJ that support survivors and raise awareness include
Teal Tender Hearts for Ovarian Cancer Cancer Awareness and The Mary Anne Mazanec Ovarian Cancer Foundation

As a 10 year survivor and someone who has benefited from the research supported by these organizations I am thankful for each and every organization that is making a difference in ovarian cancer research.

Grant Applicants Wanted

The Kaleidoscope of Hope Foundation is an ovarian cancer foundation based in NJ. The Foundation has awarded more than $ 2.5 Million to ovarian cancer research since its founding in 2000. I wrote about their recent research grantee, Dr George Preti recently on this blog.

If you are a cancer researcher, information on how to apply for one of KOH's 2014 grants is available here. Grant applications are due by January 13, 2014. KOH has a Scientific Advisory Committee which provides an expert preliminary review of the research grant applications and then shares their invaluable recommendations to the KOH Board who makes the grant award decisions.

Foundations like KOH and their support of cancer research make a difference in the futures of women diagnosed with gynecologic cancers.

Teal Walk to Teal Talk - A Perfectly Teal Weekend

A Walk - Saturday
A few weeks ago I formed Team 1 Reason and registered my husband and I to walk in the Kaleidoscope of Hope Foundation's Avon-by-the-Sea walk. KOH raises funds for ovarian cancer research. On Saturday on a beautiful autumn morning we drove east to the shore. I was thrilled that my cousins Fred, Janine, Marion and Allison joined my team and many more family and friends contributed to the walk. Although the last donations to the team are not yet posted online it looks like we raised ~$ 2900 for Ovarian Cancer research. The entire walk raised ~ $101,000 for research.

We all enjoyed a day at the shore and are already planning to attend next year.
Walkers gathering on the Avon NJ Beach before the KOH walk.

Team 1 Reason

A Talk - Sunday

I wrote about teen Kristin Gmunder's role in an Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day in my last post.

She put together a wonderful program which included these presentations:
"ovarian Cancer 101" by Wilberto Nieves-Neira one of the wonderful gyn-oncs at CINJ.
"Genetics of Ovarian Cancer"Michele Horner MS, CGC St Peter's University Hospital
"Preventing Cancer through Nutrition" Teresa Grasso , RD,CDE St Peters University Hospital
"Advocating for Government Support" Janice Swierczek , VP- Teal Tea Foundation

I told my story as did Kristin's Aunt, Karen Herzog a survivor who is part of OCNA's Survivors Teaching Students program.

I can say I walked away learning something new from each of the courses. Did you know that you should not have more than 66 grams of fat at day if your daily intake is 2000 calories? Did you know that ovarian cancer is heterogeous? ( There is not a dominant mutation but rather many mutations.)  Did you know that you can reduce your risk of ovarian cancer by having your first child before the age of 25? Did you know you should eat multicolor fruit and vegetables to get good anti-oxidants? This was a very nice and informative day.

Great Job Kristin!

2013 KOH Dinner and Supporting Research

Last Saturday, my husband and I attended the Kaleidoscope of Hope Foundation's (KOH)  Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony at Doolan's in Spring Lake.

A few years ago I was a member of the  Board of Directors of KOH. This dinner gave me the opportunity to catch up with my KOH friends and gave me a chance to speak one-on-one with the researchers that KOH supported. This year KOH gave two research grant awards.

The first award went to George Preti, PhD who works at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia. The Center is a non-profit institute that conducts basic research on taste and smell. Dr Preti's research is titled " A Novel Aproach to Ovarian Cancer: Screening Using an Interdisciplinary Investigation of Its Volatile Signature". Dr Preti will collaborate with researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and the project will study the volatile chemical signature of blood from women with ovarian cancer and healthy women. Dr Preti was very willing to discuss his projects and invited me to visit his lab. I hope to provided a more detailed explanation of his research which includes dogs, a gas chromatograph to study head space above blood samples and nano technology.

The second grant award went to Britta Weigelt , PhD and Herbert Vargas, MD from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Their research is " Benchmarking Intra-Tumor Heterogeneity in Ovarian Cancer : Linking in-vivo Imaging Phenotypes with Histology and Genomics." I had a very interesting discussion with Dr Weigelt after the awards ceremony. She explained how there are DNA differences between ovarian cancer cells found in the same tumor. In other words even though a woman might have tumors with a pathology of epithelial ovarian cancer , the cells might be different genetically. I knew that there were various types of ovarian cancer but had not heard that the genetic makeup within a tumor could be different. This may explain why chemotherapy may work on some of the cells in a tumor but not others since their genetic makeup is different. And this may explain why some women recur quickly.

I am so happy that KOH continues to support OC research and that I can support KOH.

For more information on their research please see the awards page on the KOH website.

Fun and Informative

Last night Nick and I attended the Kaleidoscope of Hope ( KOH) Foundation's 2011 Spring Gala. It was wonderful getting a chance to see all my KOH friends. The food at the Hamilton Park Hotel was delicious and the service wonderful. We cheered the fact that KOH has awarded over $2 million to research in the past 11 years. We had fun dancing and looking at the silent auction items and celebrating the Founders Award presentation to the Castle Family for their long time support of KOH.

The informative part of the evening was the time I spent talking to this year's research grant awardees Dr. Andrea McCollum and Dr David Hyman.

Dr. McCollum is a post doc fellow at the NCI in Maryland. She works in the lab of Dr Elise Kohn. The research to be supported by KOH is "BAG3 as a predictive marker for sensitivity to chemotherapy and G2/M-targeted agents". Dr. McCollum will be looking at a gene to predict where or not a women's ovarian cancer will be responsive to carboplatin or other targeted agents.

Dr Hyman 's research "Mitigating acquired carboplatin hypersensitivity in ovarian cancer: a randomized trial of 30-minute versus 3-hour carboplatin infusion schedule with assessment of cost effectiveness." was the second young investigator research award presentation. Having experienced a carboplatin allergic reaction I was happy to have the opportunity to discuss the difference between his clinical trial design and the desensitization that other researchers have studied.

It is the support of research by organizations like KOH that will help us answer the many questions we have about why some women's cancer ovarian cancer responds to carboplatin and others don not and how to deliver carboplatin safely to more women. Sometimes we need to think outside the box to find an answer.

Closing a Door

December 31st marks the end of my three year term on the Board of Directors of the Kaleidoscope of Hope Foundation. It has been my pleasure and an honor to serve with so many other women and men whose priority is to fund ovarian cancer research and raise awareness of the disease. I will continue to support the mission of KOH and a number of events not as a Board member but rather as a volunteer.

Since KOH's mission is to fund research I have had the opportunity to meet researchers whose work is cutting edge and who are dedicated to finding a cure. I shared my story with many of them so that they knew the face of the disease. I had a hard time explaining to them just how appreciative I am of their efforts. I even had the opportunity to tour one researcher's lab at The Ohio State University . And I've had the chance to work with the wonderful doctors on our Scientific Advisory Committee to draft this year's request for grants proposal.

I have enjoyed meeting women from other ovarian cancer groups who guide their groups in efforts to raise funds for research, support women diagnosed with the disease and raise awareness. I hope that the consortium that has been formed will continue to prosper and find its collective voice.

One of my favorite activities as a Board member was working with our web designer to update the KOH website. I learned about design, layout , and how to edit the site. But the best part of being a Board member has been the opportunity to meet other women diagnosed with the disease and family members of those who lost their lives to ovarian cancer. I met them at the Gala, at the walks , at the Passing of the Torch and at awareness events. We are fighting together to make teal the new pink, to have primary care physicians listen to our symptoms and diagnose us quicker and to work closely with our gynecologic-oncologists to find the best treatment for each one of us. Many of these women have become my friends.

I am not sure what lies ahead in 2011 but as the saying goes "as one door closes another opens". So I am looking forward to the next door that will open.

Every Day is a Blessing ! Indeed.
PS Thanks Matt for taking such a beautiful photo of a door in Riva.

Lots of Zeal

Sunday October 10th was the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Kaleidoscope of Hope Foundation. The Foundation raises funds for research and awareness for ovarian cancer. I have served on the Board since 2008.

The Zeal for Teal Brunch was held at the Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick, NJ. KOH supporters , doctors, nurses , social workers and survivors gathered to celebrate the work KOH has done to raise awareness and almost $ 2 million raised for research in its first ten years.

Jenny Allen , survivor, author and performer of I Got Sick then I Got Better (and someone I have written about before) MC'd the event. The Foundation awarded Scope of Excellence Awards to physicians who concentrate on treating ovarian cancer patients. The honorees were:
George Coukos, MD, PhD, Director, Ovarian Cancer Research Center, University of Pennylvania Abramson Cancer Center, Lorna Rodriguez, MD, PhD, Chief of Gynecologic Oncology, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Brian Slomovitz, MD, Gynecologist Oncologist, Carol G. Simon Cancer Center, Daniel H. Smith, MD, Gynecologist Oncologist, Holy Name Hospital, Mario M. Leitao, Jr., MD, FACOG, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Darlene Gibbon, MD, Clinical Director of Gynecologic Oncology, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

Dr Rodriguez and Dr Gibbon are my CINJ doctors. Their nurses as well as a number of other oncology nurses and social workers were there too.

It was a wonderful way to honor healthcare providers who do so much for women with ovarian cancer.

A Pink Ribbon in my Heart

It was raining hard all day in NJ on Friday, October 1st the remnants of Hurricane Nicole. There were flooded roadways throughout the state which made my trip to Morristown take an extra half hour. And the rain meant moving the Passing of the Torch event from the outside Greek Theater at the College of St. Elizabeth to Dolan Hall inside the Annunciation Center. What the rain did not dampen was the spirit of collaboration and support of those present to pass the flame of ovarian cancer awareness in September to October's breast cancer awareness.

The Passing of the Torch campaign is a collaboration of the Kaleidoscope of Hope Foundation and FORCE - Facing our Risks of Cancer Empowered. It is a way to highlight the hereditary link between breast and ovarian cancer in women who have a BRCA1 &BRCA2 mutation, honors cancer survivors and those at risk and remembers those who lost their lives to cancer.

Two speakers told their moving stories of survivorship while an oncology nurse gave an informative talk regarding BRCA1&2 mutations and hereditary risk management. (Check out the FORCE website for info about hereditary cancers. ) Those present bought luminaries and as the clouds lifted and the sun set College of St. Elizabeth volunteers lit the candles. Other luminaries were purchased online to honor survivors of breast and ovarian cancer. Check out the park here.

At the end of the event I took a walk outside and saw the luminary I purchased in memory of my sister Roberta. As much as I am a women of teal, I will forever have a pink ribbon in my heart.
